the Online alias "Rachel shapes" was created with the belief that we are colourful, ever-changing beings.
art can give us the power to reclaim and shape our own narratives.
Rachel Nwokoro (@RachelShapes) is a Cross-Disciplinary Storyteller. Believing that the story should be at the centre of the artistic process, she experiments with different media to unearth what each story needs.
Born and bred in London, she is a young black woman of Nigerian heritage. She has used her unfortunate life experiences to build an appreciation of the little things and has learnt how to find beauty in even the darkest spaces. She tells stories in a bid to understand things that she doesn’t, to find ways to be a better human, to encourage awareness and provoke thought around important issues and most importantly… because she loves it.
"The passion this woman has in her poetry makes me smile as wide as my jaws will allow “
- Hollie McNish
Although Rachel has been performing spoken word poetry for three years (nationally and internationally) she has been telling stories for much longer. She has worked professionally as an actor since the age of 13 after surreptitiously knocking on agent doors, getting signed and alerting her parents after the event. Some years later, Rachel was awarded the Vice Chancellor's Scholarship for the Arts at Durham University where she read a BSc in Natural Sciences (Biology, English and French) for two years while directing multiple productions.
Rachel is currently training with a full scholarship at acclaimed drama school ArtsEducational Schools London and while simultaneously holding the position of Roundhouse Resident Artist.
She likes cuddles and pancakes so if you have either of the two then they will be happily received.
